The multi-millionaires seated to my right were not amused. We were at a 17th-century villa atop the highest hill in Rome, sipping Prosecco and trying to make polite conversation — which, for my part, meant attempting to convince them not to send for their jet on account of the weak air conditioning at their five-star hotel.

A few months ago as part of Tablet’s “get out of the office” campaign we visited the Marian Goodman Gallery to see the Gerhard Richter exhibit. Our hosts were incredible, walking us through the exhibit, offering insight into Richter’s method, and letting us peruse the gallery long after it had closed. Their generosity stemmed from their love of art — and no doubt from their love of this artist in particular.

New York Fashion Week is behind us and the tents have been struck. The shows were a broad spectrum from the glorious to the ho-hum. The best was saved for first, and the weakest came last. The number of shows is staggering when you consider the editors, stores and camp followers who did their best to attend each and every one, from blissful beginning to blistering end.
