If December is a month for reflection, January is a month for looking ahead. We sat down with Tablet co-founder Laurent Vernhes, not to get some grand predictions for the state of the travel business, but simply to find out what’s on his personal travel agenda for 2011. First up: Siwa, Egypt.

“Last year I went to Namibia with my oldest son. This year I’m going to the White Desert in Egypt, close to the Libyan border, with my second son. I’m reading my kids all the Tintin books right now, so I think that’s where he picked up this interest in pharaohs and
pyramids and the Middle East. And it just worked out that I hadn’t been to Egypt either. Obviously it’s a huge tourist draw, but it was something I was reserving for after my retirement, inspired by Agatha Christie and Death on the Nile. It’s been there for five thousand years, and I was confident it would still be there when I’m 70.”
“We’ll stay at this amazing hotel while we’re there, Adrere Amellal. It’s very remote. I have no idea how we’ll get there, but that’s the plan. And thanks also to Tintin, my son is dying to go to Petra, in Jordan — he pointed to the picture and said ‘I want to go there,’ totally unprompted, which is not a common sentiment for him to express. So we’ll see about combining Egypt and Jordan on this trip.”
