Looking Forward

What's Happening This March

March can be such a tease. Winter’s snug hold has loosened, but Spring is still backstage, warming up for a grand entrance.  So you can either embrace this season of the thaw. Or escape it. Here’s some motivation to get out and about during this most fickle of months.

NEW YORK
The Armory Show
The contemporary art fair descends on Manhattan’s west side. If you like your art shows on a less titanic scale, check out the Beatrice Caracciolo show at the Paula Cooper Gallery, open until March 12.
March 3—6

RIO DE JANEIRO
Carnival
The Carnival of all Carnivals will take over Brazil’s cultural capital. Pack your sequins.
March 4—8

ST. MORITZ
The Cresta Run
This year marks the 125th annual Cresta Run at the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club. Not for the faint of heart, this bobsled track is legendarily treacherous, so we won’t hold it against you if you’d rather watch than compete.
March 6 is the Terminato of the race

PARIS
Rodin – Sugimoto at The Gagosian Gallery
Don’t miss the chance to see Rodin’s monumental sculptures paired with photography by Hiroshi Sugimoto, one of the world’s most admired living photographers.
On view until March 25

AUSTIN
South By Southwest
There aren’t too many things that get both bigger and better over time, but SXSW is one of them. The popular festival entails nine days of film, music, and technology.
Interactive Week is March 11-15, Film is March 11-19, and Music is March 15-20

SAN FRANCISCO
Developed and Undeveloped: Photographic Landscapes at the de Young
From Ansel Adams to Edward Burtynsky, this photography exhibition includes a number of inspiring approaches to framing our natural environments.
On view until March 20

AMSTERDAM
Tulip Season at Keukenhof
In need of a spring awakening? Just outside of Amsterdam is Keukenhof, the world’s largest flower garden—which plants 7 million tulip bulbs annually.
First day of the season is March 24

LONDON
Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race
The weather will probably be less than desirable, but thousands will still turn up for the great boat race between Oxford and Cambridge. Before you go, be sure to choose your blue (Oxford is dark and Cambridge is the light).
Race begins at 17:00 on March 26

TIERRA DEL FUEGO
Antarctica
The end of March means the end of summer in the southern hemisphere, which is the best time to visit Antarctica and Patagonia. So if seeing the seventh continent is your 2011 to-do list, get yourself to LAN’s offices in a hurry.
The last boats for Antarctica leave from Ushuaia at the end of March
