With two chances to see Kanye and 30,000 samples of grilled cheese, how could April possibly be the cruelest month? Our list of the month’s global happenings gives you plenty of reasons for optimism.

SANTIAGO
Lollapalooza
Kanye West, The Killers, Jane’s Addiction, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are set to headline the first international edition of Lollapalooza at O’Higgins Park in Santiago, Chile. Also included in the 50+ acts are local bands like Los Bunkers and Chico Trujillo. While in town, Lolla fans should make sure to check out The Aubrey, a new hotel in the hip neighborhood of Bellavista.
April 2—3
FARALYA
Turkey’s Butterfly Valley
Feeling adventurous? On the southwest coast of Turkey is a remote seaside canyon that’s home to the unique Jersey Tiger butterfly. The best time to spot these beauties—and enjoy uncrowded beaches—is in the spring and early summer, before the summer crowds descend.
MEXICO CITY
Zona Maco
Zona Maco is Mexico City’s premier international contemporary art fair, featuring more than 80 international galleries under the roof of the Centro Banamex. Escape the crowds with a tour of Casa Barragán, the unassuming yet enchanting former home of Pritzker-prize winning architect Luis Barragán.
April 6—10
PARIS
Banlieus Bleues Jazz Festival
For five weeks, twenty different venues scattered across Paris’s northern banlieues host the Banlieues Bleues Jazz Festival. Parisians can get down to the sounds of the Big Easy when the Dirty Dozen Brass Band performs on closing weekend.
Closing weekend is April 8—9
INDIO
Coachella Music Festival
Grab your jorts and Purell and head to Palm Springs for three days of fun under the hot desert sun. This year’s headliners include Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, The Strokes and Kanye (yup, straight off the plane from Santiago). Some of the best sounds however, can be heard off the main stage, under the blessedly cool shade of the smaller tents.
April 15—17
LOS ANGELES
Grilled Cheese Invitational
Have a competitive streak and a thing for cheese? Get thee to this “Grilled Cheese Sammich Competition” to sample some of the country’s best. (We remind you that it’s not alchemy. It’s about butter.)
April 23
NEW YORK
Sonia Delaunay at The Cooper-Hewitt
Now on at The Cooper-Hewitt is Color Moves, a show devoted to the French artist Sonia Delaunay and her trademark ability to create movement and rhythm with color and pattern. Like what you see? Down the street at The Guggenheim you can check out the cubist-inspired works of her husband, Robert Delaunay.
The exhibition closes June 5, 2011
LONDON
The Royal Wedding
Didn’t get an invite to Westminster Abbey? Don’t let that stop you from enjoying the city-wide festivities when Prince William marries Catherine Middleton.
