Looking Forward

What's Happening in May

April showers bring May flowers … and barbecue competitions. And film festivals. And regattas. We offer you a list of the most interesting things to see and do when spring’s in full swing.

FERRARA
The Palio
The other Palio — Siena’s twice-annual horse race — is the famous one. This one, in the medieval town of Ferrara, situated between Bologna and Venice, is a touch more low-key, but still quite atmospheric.
The festival begins May 7 and culminates with the big race on May 29

CANNES
Cannes International Film Festival
You’ll have to have accreditation to get into the film showings themselves, but soaking up the atmosphere in Cannes during the week of excess is a worthy experience in itself.
May 11-19

PARIS
Anish Kapoor at The Grand Palais
Anish Kapoor, the Indian-born British artist (of Bean/Cloud Gate fame) has been challenged to create a work for the 13,500-square-meter nave of the Grand Palais.
May 11-June 23

MEMPHIS
World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest
Come watch punny teams like the Natural Born Grillers, Aporkalypse Now, and Reservoir Hogs duke it out in the undisputed barbecue capital of the world.
May 12-14

PRAGUE
Prague Spring International Music Festival
A Lollapalooza for the classical set, this month-long music festival presents a chance to hear live performances by some of the greatest orchestras in the world.
May 12-June 4

NEW YORK
Lykke Li
The Swedish pop songstress has back-to-back performances at Webster Hall, a convenient stone’s throw from The Cooper Square Hotel (and its excellent bar).
May 17 & May 18

KOH SAMUI
Koh Samui Regatta
Now in its tenth year, this international sailing regatta is held off Chaweng Beach. It’s really a multi-day festival, and with such added diversions as photography workshops and golf tourneys, will appeal even to non-sailors.
May 28-June 4

LOS ANGELES
Tim Burton at LACMA
The Museum of Modern Art’s hugely successful Tim Burton retrospective will be hosted in the new Resnick Pavilion at LACMA. It will be amazing, but expect lines.
May 29-October 31

I love tablet hotels, now the new events section provides me an additional reason to travel. I’ve found three things to go see already, Anish Kapoor at the Grand Palais, Lykke Li, and World Championship BBQ contest. All are delicious.
