Savage Beauty

Alexander McQueen At The Met

The world now knows about Alexander McQueen. The late designer has long been appreciated in fashion and art circles, but after Catherine Middleton chose McQueen’s atelier (now under the creative direction of Sarah Burton) to design her wedding gown, McQueen might just be the most famous dressmaker of our time.

However, to call McQueen a dressmaker would be to call Julia Child a cook or to say William Carlos Williams was a physician with a knack for letter writing; McQueen was an intensely imaginative storyteller, spinning tales out of silk and stitching metaphors with feathers. Now McQueen — the artist, is being honored with a retrospective show, ‘Savage Beauty’ at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The show features approximately 100 ensembles and 70 accessories from his prolific, nearly 20-year career. If there is one museum show you see this summer in New York, make it this. ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’ is on view at The Met May 4 through July 31.
