Outdoor Cinema In London
Tags: , , ,

A frisson of excitement fills the air with the news of The Nomad, the UK’s “first roaming cinema,” which will hit outdoor venues across London this summer. From classics to cult favorites to modern masterpieces, there’s a bit of something for every taste, and the experience includes costumed ushers, live bands and theatrical performances. Expect Dangerous Liaisons with a string quartet, Some Like It Hot accompanied by a live jazz band, and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert with drag queen entertainers.

Organized by Lexi Cinema and sponsored by Saab, The Nomad will be donating a share of the proceeds to The Sustainability Institute, making this a fun-filled evening with a serious feel-good factor. And when the weather starts to cool, the roving reels will be retreating to some incredible indoor locations — think chapels and castles.

The fun starts this weekend in Dulwich Park with a showing of Casablanca at 9pm before moving on to Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park and other public spaces across the capital.

The Nomad is not the only game in town. Cinema-lovers can also attempt to snag front-row seats (or picnic blankets) at many of London’s other outdoor film screenings this summer. At the end of July, Somerset House’s season begins, and its neoclassical courtyard will be transformed into quite a sophisticated sight. In August, plan to cozy up with a glassy of bubbly and a box of buttery popcorn at Syon Park at their Cinema Under the Stars. Finally, wrap up the season with The Scoop, a sunken amphitheater by the Thames, whose lineup includes British blockbuster The King’s Speech and the Coen brothers’ True Grit. And lest you find a night with less than ideal weather (it is London, after all), there’s always the Sunday Night Film Club at the Charlotte Street Hotel in Bloomsbury. —L.S.
