Looking Forward

What's Happening In June

Bring on the heat, the hamburgers, and outdoor entertainment in all its forms. It’s time to enjoy the curative properties of the first month of summer.

AARUS
Olafur Eliasson
The Danish-Icelandic artist who enchanted New York in 2008 with his Waterfalls has recently completed an installation in Denmark entitled Your Rainbow Panorama. The circular, rainbow-tinted viewing platform rests atop the ARoS Kunstmuseum and features 360 degree views of the city.
Installation is scheduled to open May 28, and an exhibition of the artist’s work is scheduled for June 18th.

VENICE
The Biennale
Where else can you witness James Franco competing for attention with rods of bamboo? The actor will be exhibiting (don’t act so surprised) along side Mike and Doug Starn’s Big Bambú, the crazy nest-like fortress that was assembled on the Met’s roof about this time last year.
June 4 – November 27

NEW YORK
Shakespeare in the Park
This year, the Public Theater will put on productions of Measure for Measure and All’s Well That Ends Well. While you spend an entire morning in the cue, just remember what they say about good things never coming easy.
Performances are scheduled for June 6 – July 30

BERLIN
Helmut Newton Polaroids
In conjunction with the release of the new book from Taschen, The Helmut Newton Museum will host a special exhibition of the German photographer’s Polaroids, many of which have never been shown publicly. These candid shots, occasionally accompanied by Newtown’s scrawl, provide insight into the creative process of one of the world’s great imagists.
Opens June 9

BOSTON
Foster The People
This LA-based indie rock band has been compared to MGMT, but we think you’ll find that they have a sound all of their own. Their first album Torches was released earlier this week and it’s a miracle that their House of Blues show with the Cold War Kids and The Naked and Famous hasn’t sold out yet.
June 16

EDINBURGH
Edinburgh International Film Festival
It’s a bit of a torturous affair to have a film festival in a locale as beautiful as Edinburgh, but since it has been in operation since 1947, we see now reason to stop now.
June 15 – 26

LONDON
Wimbledon
Players from over 60 countries will duke it out for a chance to kiss the cup. Don’t forget your hat.
June 20 – July 3

AIX-EN-PROVENCE
Festival d’Aix-en-Provence
This scenic, month-long opera and chamber music festival will open with an exhibition of eight short films by the South African artist William Kentridge.
Opens June 22

SANTA FE
Santa Fe Opera
And because there’s no such thing as too much good music in too many beautiful places, we also recommend the Santa Fe Opera. Five productions will be offered over the course of eight weeks, including Puccini’s La Bohéme and the first major U.S. production of Vivaldi’s opera Griselda.
Opening Gala is June 30
