Levi’s Print Workshop

A Pop-up Arts Space in Berlin

If you find the idea of going on vacation and then being told to get to work strange and/or unappealing, we don’t blame you. But when the order is coming from the creative department at Levi’s, perhaps allowances can be made.

The denim megabrand solidified their German presence when they collaborated on the 25Hours Hotel near their company headquarters in Frankfurt. And now they’re encouraging residents and visitors of Berlin to roll up their sleeves at the Levi’s Print Workshop, a temporary arts studio/exhibition space housed in the Alte Münze, a former industrial complex in Mitte.

In addition to offering free screen-printing instruction and supplies, the pop-up is meant to celebrate the Berlin cultural movers and shakers that embody the gumptious Levi’s “Go Forth” spirit. Joe Hatchiban, for example, is the founder of the Bearpit Karaoke Show, a giant outdoor singalong that has become one of the city’s most popular summer activities. Another honoree, Fadi San, is a community organizer who has worked to prevent hundreds of at-risk school kids children from falling into lives of violence and crime.

Portuguese street artist Vhils (real name Alexandre Farto) has paid tribute to these individuals by blasting their portraits onto the façades of buildings across the city. Their prints will also be shown at the Alte Münze over the course of the month.

The Print Workshop is open to the public Wednesdays through Fridays from 12-10pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-9pm, through August 18th. There is no charge for instruction, use of equipment or materials. The Alte Münze is located near Alexanderplatz on Am Krögel at the corner of Neue Jüdenstrasse.
