Food trucks are nothing new in the US. But in the UK, there’s still some novelty to the movement. This summer, the crowds have come out to show their support for the best of London’s rolling restaurants.

These on-the-go bistros are serving up scrumptious plates (paper, of course) of everything from tacos to falafel, dim sum to banh mi, made from fresh and seasonal ingredients, and offered at pretty great prices. Not to be discounted either is the fun factor. These trucks are mostly helmed by young entrepreneurs, so you can expect a liberal helping of personality as well.
Our favorites:
Street Kitchen
Pearl restaurant’s Jun Tanaka and the Food Initiative’s Mark Jankel bring truly gourmet British lunches to Finsbury Park Square, just a stone’s throw away from Liverpool Street Station. From a shiny new Airstream, diners can order daily rotating dishes such as slow-roast lamb shoulder, lemon sole and Eton mess.

Healthy Yummies
This retro-style food van (which classic car lovers will recognize as a Bedford CF) has pitched up at Old Street’s bustling Red Market this summer, where you can actually find quite a few of London’s best-loved street food vendors. Takeaway treats include pheasant with chanterelle and chestnut broth and black pudding with pippin apple chutney and spelt toast.

Big Apple Hot Dogs
East Londoners can now get a taste of New York with Big Apple’s homemade hot dogs. For those with a real appetite, their super-sized pork and beef dog — filled with grilled onions and lashings of mustard and red sauce on a Anderson’s of Hoxton bun — is just the ticket.

Wahaca Mexican Street Kitchen
The popular Oaxacan-inspired chain has taken to the streets in a converted 1958 Citroen HY van, complete with a charcoal Robata grill. The menu features tacos, burritos and salad’s as well as their signature pork pibil, slow roasted in a Yucatecan marinade. Most days you can find the truck at Canary Wharf.
