What's Happening in August

Savor it while you can. While the end of summer looms on the horizon, there’s definitely time for one more trip. Here is a list of August’s hottest events.

ROCKLAND
Maine Lobster Festival
Maine’s annual Lobster Festival boasts a lobster crate race, a sea goddess coronation and 20,000 pounds of your favorite crustacean. Not a hard sell.

NEW YORK
The US Open
After he lost the Wimbledon title to Djokovic, Rafa vowed to return to the top. Watch to see if he can pull it off.
August 29-September 11

PARIS
Paris-Delhi-Bombay at le Centre Pompidou
The product of an unprecedented Franco-Indian collaboration, “Paris-Delhi-Bombay” presents Indian society through the eyes of both French and Indian artists. The exhibit focuses on themes of belief, identity, and production.

LENOX
Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood
The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s picturesque summer home hosts cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel Ax. The duo will play Schubert, Beethoven, and Brahms. The Blantyre, just down the road, would be a great place to crash.

BERKELEY
Adele at the Greek Theater
Since it opened its doors in 1903, UC Berkeley’s Greek Theater has welcomed all the stars, everyone from the Grateful Dead to Teddy Roosevelt. Adele will surely be in good company.

BUDAPEST
Szigat Music Festival
Held in a shipyard on the Danube River’s Obudai Island (“Old-Buda Island”), the Szigat Music Festival is one of Europe’s largest, at 350,00+ visitors. This year’s lineup includes plenty of big names like Crystal Castles, Interpol, and Kate Nash. Reigning over the tour will be The High Priest of Pop himself (that’s Prince, not Biebs), performing on the mainstage August 9th .

NANTUCKET
Nantucket Race Week
A week-long celebration, Nantucket Race Week hosts regattas and parties that benefit Nantucket Community Sailing. Book a room at the White Elephant and start off the big week in style: arrive by boat.

ROME
Cinema Isle
Expect star appearances at Rome’s annual summer film festival on Tibernia Island. Attendees are treated to retrospectives, previews, and blockbusters while they lounge by the Tevere River.

STOCKHOLM
Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition at Fotografiska
Sweden’s national photography museum displays almost 200 Mapplethorpe prints. The celebrated 20th-century photographer transitioned to studio photography when he acquired his Swedish-made Hasselblad 500.

BODRUM PENINSULA
Sunning at the Maçakizi
Jutting out into the cool blue of the Aegean, the Bodrum Peninsula is a fine place to celebrate summer’s final hurrah, and the Maçakizi is undeniably the hippest home base to see and be seen. Come with your copy of Hello! and head out early to the deck to guarantee maximum preparedness for spotting Europe’s swish celebs.
