Now Open: Parnassus Books

A New Independent Bookseller in Nashville

With the opening of her new book store Parnassus, best-selling author, Ann Patchett encourages Nashvillians (and all of us) to shop local.

Lately we’ve had to witness the closure of many of our favorite independent book stores — surely no sadder a sight. So news of Parnassus’ opening in Nashville is downright uplifting. The shop is co-owned by renowned author and Nashville local, Ann Patchett and publishing veteran Karen Hayes. The store takes its name from Mount Parnassus, the mythological Grecian home of literature and learning.

Considering the current heyday for Kindles, e-readers and tablets, it’s a daring, economy-defying move. On top of that, Parnassus has fewer square footage than its brick and mortar megastore competitors. Yet what is offered is of far greater value: an impeccably edited selection of books and well-read human beings ready and able to make thoughtful recommendations. Patchett and Hayes hope for the store to “serve as a center for Nashville’s literary community.” Given the response from the community and media so far, we’re optimistic.
