Looking Forward

What's happening in February

Poor February, the runt of the calendrical litter. Things are looking up in 2012 though: it’s a leap year. Let us offer up some inspiration to go out and seize the days — all 29 of them.

CHIANG MAI / Chiang Mai Flower Festival
All across town, the Thai city puts on incredible displays of regional flora — orchids, chrysanthemums, marigolds — earning its nickname, the “Rose of the North.” February 3 – 6

WASHINGTON DC / Snapshot: Painters and Photography at the Phillips Collection
The show, featuring the work of artists like Bonnard, Vuillard, and Félix Vallotton, explores the many ways the invention of the handheld camera influenced painting and printmaking — a somewhat bittersweet commemoration, given Kodak’s recent bankruptcy. February 4 – May 6

STOCKHOLM / Stockholm Design Week
Design for the masses has gone mainstream, but there’s still every reason to visit the movement’s Scandinavian birthplace. Stockholm Design Week will feature up-and-coming designers from Sweden and beyond. February 6–12

Merill Garbus’s music isn’t for everyone, but it’s certainly worth a try. She and her bandmates are enormously creative, using a loop pedal to pile layer upon layer of sound — a big noise from a small band. February 18

MADEIRA / Carnaval
The capital city of Funchal hosts one of Europe’s best Carnaval celebrations. There are parades all week, but it’s best to stick around for the final one, known as trapalhão, where things can get particularly saucy. February 18–21
