Entry #1 - New York by no-leve
You may recall that we didn’t explicitly ask for traditional architecture photos — we only required that all submissions should feature a building in some way. Here’s a selection of photos that didn’t make the cut in the main contest, but which we feel deserve some recognition for their creativity. Help us pick the best one. The winner, determined by popular vote, will receive copies of our last couple of Tablet10 magazines. Voting closes at 8pm EST on Friday, July 8.

Entry #1 - NY2 by peet_ny
The judges have spoken, and with over 1,800 entries submitted during the past week, we’ve narrowed the field to ten finalists. Now it’s over to you. Use the polling widget to record your vote, or post your choice in the comments — IP addresses will be recorded, so it’s no use doing both. The voting deadline is 12pm EST on Tuesday, June 29, so get cracking!

We’re not unique in claiming Berlin as one of our favorite cities. The formerly divided German capital, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of its infamous wall last November, is a hotbed of culture and intellectualism, cramming a striking amount of progress into two decades of post–Cold War liberation.
Berlin’s contemporary creative class isn’t designing in a vacuum, however: references to Germany’s history proliferate the city, from Peter Eisenman’s once-controversial Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (2,711 rectangular blocks of stone on a slope of land near the Brandenburger Tor) to Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum to the Reichstag itself, still scored with bullet holes and outfitted with a shiny glass dome courtesy of Sir Norman Foster.

This week we’re proud to announce a new photo contest, co-sponsored by our friends at Architizer, the architects’ interactive online community. The brief is a simple one: just upload your best architectural snapshot to Architizer’s Flickr page (you’ll need a free Flickr account to do so). Our judges will select the finalists, and a winner will be chosen by popular vote right here on Tablet Talk. That’s right — for better or worse, we’re leaving it up to you.
Your entry can be zany or serious; from Mom in front of the Eiffel Tower to a perfectly composed detail of a cornice. Just make sure there’s a building in the frame. The winner gets two free nights at St. James’s Hotel & Club in London, plus two free nights at the Hotel Concorde Berlin. Entries are accepted beginning on June 15th. The deadline is 8pm EST on Tuesday, June 22nd. For the full contest rules, including some fairly serious bits about rights and retouching, click here. Good luck!
